Gitam University To Host ARTiculate

Mohiniyattam dancer, Founder of Moham Attakalari and Performing Arts Department Coordinator of GITAM University, Dr. Mythili Maratt Anoop, speaking to Natyahasini, says that the Gitam University is organising a one-day seminar on ARTiculate National Conference Performative India. Mythili announces that Dr. Aruna Bhikshu, Prof. of Dance and Actor, Dept. of Dance, SN School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, will be delivering the Keynote address, while Dr. Milind Malshe, Retd. Prof. of Language and Aesthetics, IIT Bombay & Hindustani classical music vocalist, will be delivering the Valedictory address.

The Mohiniyattam dancer shares that Guntheti Naveen will be presenting a paper on the Aesthetics of Koodiyattam Practice describing the use of Rasa, Bhava, and the creative experience, while in the evening there will be an hour-long presentation of ‘Jadayu Vadham’ in Koodiyattam style. This will be presented by Kalamandalams – Charu Agaru as Ravana, Ramith Ramesh as Jadayu, Sajikumar Margi Mahesh (Mizhavu), Sarath VG (Idakka), Dakin (Chutty)and Subiksha Sundaraman (Thalam).

Mythili states that the opening session, Panel 1 is theatre, which will be chaired by Dr. Chandrasekhar Devarakonda, and Parvati Pillai will be presenting: ‘Street Theatre as a Flexible, Revolutionary and Non-intellectualized mode of communication in modern India’, and B Shrikant Nandkumar will be presenting ‘Traditional Dance-Theatre after post-independence – Observations in Tamasha’. She says that in Panel 2 that will be chaired by her, Anjana Ramesh Sharma will be analysing ‘Performance’ redefined in the social media era. “This will be followed by Sindhuja speaking on ‘Is ‘voice’ of consequence?’ and Akhila Krishnan on the ‘Identity of Mohiniyattam’; Sravya Bandaru on ‘The Visual Documentation of Indian Classical Dances: A Case Study of National Cultural Bodies of India’; and Yamini Yasoda Kurarti on Pagati Veshalu’. 

The Gitam Performing Arts Dept. coordinator says that parallelly Dr. Saroja TK, renowned vocalist and Professor at the University of Silicon Andhra, California, will be deciphering the papers presented by Sarvani Eswara, Dr. Pavani D., Varsha Kolhatkar, Asavari Degloorkar and Debverna Karmakar. She says that Sarvani Eswara will be decoding ‘Aesthetics and techniques from Varnams – with a special reference to Veena Kuppaiyar’s Reetigaula Ata Tala Varnam’. “Asavari Degloorkar will be presenting Biographical research on Pandit Jasraj and Debverna Karmakar on ‘Contributions of Pt. Chinmoy Lahiri in the field of Indian Classical Music,” she says.

According to Mythili, the afternoon session is an interesting one, where stalwarts Dr. Deepak John Mathew, Dr. Chandra Dasan, Dr. Saroja T K will be heading a panel discussion, ‘Aesthetics of Performances in Contemporary India/ Performance Making in the Digital Era.’
