Madhav Iyenger, Gifted Musician

Madhav Iyengar, Electrical and Computer Engineer from Carnegie Mellon University, is a gifted Carnatic Vocalist. A resident of the US, Madhav began learning music at the age of five years under Smt. Sitalakshmi Madhavan in Pittsburgh, PA. The 27-year-old Madhav began giving concerts since the year 2010 for organisations based in the US. The US-based singer has performed in the Mecca of Music & Dance, Chennai, during the Margazhi Festival season over the last couple of years.

Today, Madhav is a familiar face in December Season in Chennai after enthralling the audiences in the Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, and the Indian Fine Arts Society. Speaking exclusively to Natyahasini, Madhav Iyengar, states that he began learning Carnatic Music under Vidwan Sri T.M. Krishna since 2005. Recalling his first concert, the US-based singer says: “It was in a small temple in 2010 with a Thavil artist and it was a very memorable concert!”

A first singer in his immediate family, Madhav confesses that his family has been a great support. The engineer musician idolises Carnatic singers like his Guru, TM Krishna, T Brinda, MDR, RK Shriram Kumar to name a few.

When quizzed about whether being young among renowned co- artistes drive any fear, Madhav says: “I’ve frequently performed with artists both older and younger than myself. Hence it doesn’t fluster me at all.” In the same breath, he also states that his preparation for every concert be it the December Season is the same. 

Winner of many awards in the Concert and Krithi categories in the US, Madhav is not particular about lending his voice to playback singing. The Carnatic vocalist has been competing in the Mridangam category since 2007 and won several first prizes too in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana competitions. Also, Madhav has undergone advanced training in Mridangam under Kalaimamani Srimushnam Sri Raja Rao.

Madhav Iyengar, who will be performing for the RMT Samskruti Chamber Concert Series on 5 March 2022, before signing off says: “Wonderful co-artists and excellent opportunities like RMT Samskruti really boost an artist’s confidence.”
