Bharatanatyam Dancer, Choreographer, Bhagavata Mela Artist and Nattuvanar N Srikanth performed on stage for the first time as an actor in the Bhagavata Mela dance drama of Melattur, Tamil Nadu, and then also as a Bharatanatyam dancer at the age of six years. Srikanth has trained under several illustrious Gurus, including Sri Shanmugasundaram Pillai, Dr. Saraswati, and Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, at whose institution, he broadened his horizons in the art of Natya as expounded by Bharatha Muni. He has also performed with leading dancers like Dhananjayans, Narasimacharis, Chitra Visweswaran, Lakshmi Viswanathan, Radha, Krishnaveni Lakshmanan, Krishnakumari Narendran, Malavika Sarukkai, Anita Ratnam, Shobana, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Vineeth, etc.
A graded artist of Doordarshan and an empanelled artist of ICCR, Srikanth has received many awards like the Yuva Kala Bharathi in 1997, Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Manram Award in 1998, Talent Promotion Award in 2000, Award of Excellence in 2001, Lakshmi Viswanathan Endowment for Abhinaya and Pandanallur Shanmuga Sundaram Pillai Memorial Award in 2005, Nartana Kishora Sundaram in 2006 and Mudralaya Award for Nattuvangam in 2009. He was awarded the Junior Fellowship from the Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India.
In the all-male Bhagavata Mela, Srikanth has specialised in performing female roles, such as Sita, Devaki, etc. The perfection, Srikanth has attained in these roles and in his dance has won him accolades. He successfully balances and makes effective use of the Lasya and Tandava aspects in his dance choreography and innovations.
Srikanth has acted in a few documentary and feature films including ‘Srinivasa Ramanuja’ for BBC, ‘Charukesi’ for ZDF channel, West Germany, ‘Sculptures that come alive’ for the International Film Festival, ‘Ragam Sangeetham’ and ‘Bharatham’ for Raj TV, Chennai, G. V. Iyer’s feature film ‘Swami Vivekananda’, performed in ‘Shishu Sadhana” – a DVD produced by Kala Bharathi, Canada and performed the title song in K. Balachandar’s tele serial “Tenmozhiyal”.
