Kuchipudi and Vilasini Natyam dancer, Dr. Anupama Kylash, after the wonderful experience of Shringara Workshop, will now focus on “The Concept of Bhakti – Genesis and Development” at the four-day workshop to be held from June 11, 2021 to June 15, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm under the auspices of Sparsh, Kolkata, to be curated by Arupa Lahiry and Suman Sarawgi.
According to Anupama, ‘Bhakti’, the idea, has had a long and interesting journey. “A concept emerging out of indigenous thought and culture, Bhakti has manifested in multiple ways, be it the contemplative Bhakti Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita, the joyous, service and Sādhana based, ‘Ishtha Daiva’ idea of the Srimad Bhagavatha Purāna, which in turn, influenced the ecstatic Bhakti or Krishna Devotionalism of the Eastern Gosvamis,” she said. The dancer further said that the teachings of the Bhagavatham, the Vishishtadvaita, Dvaita and Shuddha Advaita schools of philosophy impacted immensely, poets and thinkers across the Indian sub-continent.
At the workshop, Anupama will be culling from codified texts like the ‘Narada Bhakti Sutrās’, ‘Bhakti Rasāmrta Sindhū’, ‘Ujjvala Nīlamani’, ‘Bhakti Rasāyana’, to the intense, evocative, simple yet sublime outpouring of poets, in different languages and dialects. She calls for exploring ‘Bhakti’ as a concept, a Rasa, an ideology, a statement and a system of practice.
